Welcoming Our Newest GYROTONIC® Teacher to the Team
Meet David Roman, Kinetic MKE's newest GYROTONIC® Teacher. We're thrilled to have David join our team - and we know you're going to love him just as much as we do. As a clever way to introduce this old soul to you, we sat down with David for a little Q&A. Here's what he had to say.
Tell Us about Your Love for Movement...
I’m the youngest in an artistic family and started performing very early on. When I hit puberty, I got into choreography (there were no vocal solos for this growing boy!). It wasn't until the age of 16, however, that I started to take movement seriously. I enrolled in ballet classes. I was eventually introduced to the work of Bob Fosse. Small and bow-legged, ballet was a bit of a challenge, but I kept on. I loved movement.
What Inspired You to Teach GYROTONIC®?
Much of my love for GYROTONIC® comes down to my friendship with Trey Fry, Teacher and Co-Owner of Kinetic MKE. We'd both recently moved to Milwaukee and we were trying to figure out where we fit in - how to make our mark. Our love of movement kept us in the same orbit. For example, while he was building his knowledge and literal “body of work”, I got into Reiki, Thai Bodywork, and continued my work in dance.
Trey tried to bring me into his movement world, but nothing seemed to stick until GYROTONIC®, which both complimented and expanded all that I was versed in. The shapes - the fundamentals - they were so in line with my own style and the way I trained dancers. It just felt natural, so becoming a teacher of this practice eventually became an "Ah Ha" moment for me.
How Has GYROTONIC® Impacted Your Life?
GYROTONIC® has certainly extended my life as a performer. Having the tools to not only heal oneself, but expand the dimension in which your body can express itself has profound impact. For me, the ability to extend the enjoyment of life for people through movement is an incredible gift.
What Do Your Students Say about GYROTONIC®?
Most of my students are young dancers and often express that they are taken aback by how simple GYROTONIC® movements can challenge them. It forces them to isolate parts of the structure we, as dancers, can sometimes take for granted or overlook in our modern lives.
Do You Wish Everyone Experienced GYROTONIC®?
Short answer, yes. And now, the long answer...
Happiness is good for your health. Anything that keeps us active as we age keeps us feeling more youthful, which, in turn, can make us happier. And for those with chronic pain, it's an incredible healing tool (check out Kinetic MKE's blog: Life without Chronic Pain and How GYROTONIC® Can Help).
There is also a beautiful sense of freedom in GYROTONIC® - but, this takes time. Unfortunately, we often concern ourselves with how we look to others. We develop structural walls. These walls isolate us into a version of ourselves that we are comfortable with others seeing. It's important for people to understand that our bodies weren’t designed to simply walk in straight lines - we're designed to do so much more. In order to do so, we need to let those structural walls fall down.
